Opinions?

I got this pamphlet in the mail from Crossings book club... I'm wondering if I want to join up. I checked online and if you join now you get five books for only 99 cents. What do you guys think?

(I'm asking because I wish I'd asked for opinions before I joined Grollier Children's Book Club. What a horrbible company. I don't think even Star Choice had them beat for HORRIBLE customer service. If you ever get anything from Grollier books THROW IT AWAY! Or, better yet, BURN IT! Then bury the ashes off your property so your yard isn't soiled with any of the leftover evilness. Seriously. It's a long story and I've since learned others have stories just as bad about Grollier. Put that word in your mind... Grollier... and DON'T EVER buy ANYTHING from them. Seriously.)

(Seriously.)

  1. i've joined book clubs and i like them cause i get lots of books for almost nothing. i just don't like how they scam you for money.

i joined the book of the month club a long time ago and they always sent you their monthly book choice automatically and then automatically charged you for it if you didn't call them first to tell them not to send it. so i'd always forget and end up with all these books in the mail that i didn't want and then had to send back. that was really annoying. but what was even more annoying was when they called me this summer trying to get me to sign up again. this stupid woman who barely spoke english phoned me and i told her that i didn't want to join over the phone but to send me some information in the mail and maybe i'll join later. and what did she do....SHE SIGNED ME UP!!! so all these books started coming to my MOTHER'S house. i phoned them and yelled at them and the woman on the phone is explaining that it was just a complementary trial membership. i told them i never agreed to be enrolled again and to take me off their list immediately. and then this christmas i get an letter from a COLLECTION AGENCY saying that i owed this company $60 for books that i received. well i was FUMING when i called them and the woman (who was actually really nice...which sucked cause i really wanted to yell at somebody) was like "oh no...you're not really at a collection agency...we still have control of your account" so they just do it to scare you and make you pay money that i didn't even owe them. anyways...i don't know what my point is...this was just a good opportunity for me to vent about stupid book clubs.

p.s. i would totally join again though...i love cheap books...especially lots of them

  2. my mom joined crossings... i don't know what her experience was with them tho, you could always ask her, also my mother in law sells living books and they seem to be good... we get cheap/free books thru her free is better than cheap... although for cheap books i usually just go to tramps... i paid $5.50 for a 1358pg book by tom clancy... how awesome is that... i'm already on p538 and i've had it for a 3 weeks

  3. Mel,
Are you SURE that club who "sent" you to the collection agency wasn't Grollier? It sounds about the same same to me... Although, I never encountered a "nice" person on the phone. That company must have a strict "idiots only" employment policy. Seriously.

  4. I signed up last night. Right after I wrote this. I'm such an impulse buyer... I'm excited to get my new books though. One of them will be perfect for in the hospital. It's a new Frank Pretti called "The Monster." Should be good and intense. Last time I was in the hospital I had a nice historical romance by Lori Wick I think. Didn't hold my interest. I have to do things to ensure I don't get bored in there otherwise I will get them to discharge me to early again... Last time when I got home my mom almost sent me right back... Must avoid coming home to early this time...

  6. Hey Melissa. In case you were wondering why I called you Mel, which I've NEVER done before. I must have read your name wrong the first time. I thought you were Melanie who we often call Mel...

  11. The Monster was good, and I agree with you about Lori Wick. Read one, it's pretty good, read five, and you may as well have just read the first on five times... Big Tall Man with issues meets very short Lovely Christian Girl, who is spunky and wont put up with his crap, until she sees his softer side, and begins to fall for him, at which point something inevitably happens to tear them apart, and Lovely Christian Girl just has nothing left to do but pray and trust God that he'll bring him back to her when Big Tall Man with issues has worked some of them out. God does, and they are very happy, and Man with Issues No Longer, really steps up. There is also a prologue (which I don't know how to spell) where one year later they are pregnant and talking about how happy they are. There, now you never need to read another Lori Wick again. Even though I still read them whenever I find one and don't have to buy it, it's like a romantic comedy movie, I don't need to be suprised, I like that they're predictable....

  12. LOL. That's it exactly. My problem with Lori Wick is that her characters are always such prissy perfect goody goodies. ESPECIALLY the women. I've never met people that perfect in my whole life and I know some pretty amazing Christian women. Her books are a little sicky sweet for me, but she must be doing SOMETHING right cause she's a best selling author. I just always finish reading her books thinking, "I could write something AT LEAST that good, possibly better..."
